Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Project

8

The purpose of this project is to understand the current visitor economy’s carbon footprint, including Scope 3 emissions from transportation.

By establishing a framework and process, measurement of in-destination emissions and Scope 3 transportation emissions can be identified. Understanding these emissions inform the actions required to achieve the Keystone Project: Carbon Zero by 2030.

Progress

To support tourism businesses in measuring their own emissions, RTOs have conducted multiple surveys among their members to establish a baseline of businesses currently tracking emissions and to identify barriers faced by those who are not.  A pilot programme has been launched across the Queenstown Lakes to support businesses to start carbon counting and building a broader picture of tourism supply chain emissions in the destination.

RTOs are also delivering capability-building activities for their members focused on decarbonisation, including workshops to demystify carbon, the Electrifying Queenstown event, and providing expert support resources and guidance.

Who is involved

This project is a collaboration between the Regional Tourism Organisations- Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, Queenstown Lakes District Council and Destination Southern Lakes alongside leveraging expertise and additional data sources from industry and subject matter experts.

Timeline

Action 2023 2024 2025 >2026
1. Engage a recognised expert to conduct a detailed assessment of total emissions and emissions per visitor dollar
2. Consider a top level estimate of in-destination vs Scope 3 (transportation emissions) to guide marketing plan (Foundational project 4).
3. Ensures tourism businesses are analysing their own emissions.
