The objective is to ensure there is effective, accountable leadership that can guide stakeholders across sectors and communities to deliver the plan and its various projects. Establishing formal partnership, independent governance and inter-regional collaboration is essential in achieving this objective.
A formal Destination Management Steering Group has been established between the RTOs and QLDC, initially formed during the development phases of the Destination Management Plan. This group plays a crucial role in delivering and refining the plan, ensuring alignment and consistent progress reporting across all activities.
To further enhance the successful implementation of the DMP, an independent governance group was established in October 2023. This group is tasked with overseeing district-wide progress, adopting a comprehensive, whole-system approach that guarantees independence, accountability, and the integration of expert insights.
A structured reporting cadence has been put in place to maintain transparency, progress and performance which integrates into the Grow Well | Whaiora Spatial Plan’s reporting cadence.
Inter-regional collaboration is advancing through several key initiatives that ensure strategic alignment among delivery leads, supporting partners, and broader strategies. Notable efforts include a shared services agreement between Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, as well as active participation in the Southern Way partnership, a collaborative effort among other lower South Island RTOs.
This foundation project is being led by the partners of the Destination Management plan which is the two RTOs in the Queenstown Lakes District, Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, and Queenstown Lakes District Council. A Destination Management Steering group has been established to ensure regular engagement, communication and reporting.
